Marco R. Wagner, born into a richly artistic family in Rio de Janeiro, grew up immersed in the vibrant art scene of the 1960s. With a lineage that includes a German orchestra director grandfather, a Spanish painter father, and a Brazilian pianist mother, Marco’s early years were steeped in diverse cultural influences. His journey as a musician began at 17 with his first performance in Spain, and he quickly became a part of Madrid’s iconic cultural revival, «La Movida».
In 1980, Marco moved to New York City, where he established himself as a singer-songwriter and became a familiar face in Boston’s folk scene. His first album, «What’s Love Remains» (1991), received critical acclaim in New York. The 90s saw him relocate to Nashville, a move that led to collaborations with legendary artists like Dolly Parton, Jana Stanfield, and members of The Byrds and The Wooten Brothers. His second album, «Poet, Painter & Cowboy,» further solidified his reputation. Throughout his career, Marco has toured with renowned musicians and co-founded the popular Nashville band The Joytoys.
Marco’s talent and versatility have taken him across three continents, blending influences from Brazil, Spain, and America. His 2014 album, «My Old Spain,» is a testament to his ability to weave Americana with acoustic brilliance, earning rave reviews and extensive airplay in both Europe and the USA. His latest work, «Back to the Plow» (2021), recorded entirely in his home studio in Spain, reflects his introspective journey during challenging times. This album, produced in collaboration with Grammy Award-winning engineer Michael Saint-Leon, completes a trilogy that showcases Marco’s evolving artistry.
